Here’s a small taste of San Francisco’s Rupa And The April Fishes from their headlining gig at Brooklyn’s Bell House on July 16, 2011. On this number, “Eena Meena Deeka”, the diminutive Rupa Marya works up a steam engine’s worth of energy, steering a wacky head-on collision of Memphis Rock-A-Billy and Bollywood jump (Bolly-Billy?) as the audience joins in phonetically. The band is a tight and talented group of musicians from the Bay Area’s Mission District and has evolved from its street busking origins into a full fledged gypsy swing outfit, mixing hot club & Klezmer style jazz with sultry latin & French accents.
More video featuring this insanely fun evening’s opening act, Cyro Baptista And Beat The Donkey, to be posted later this week.
