Fans of the late horror and fantasy artist Bernie Wrightson who are attending San Diego ComicCon 2017 (SDCC17) will not want to miss a special panel discussion being held by Hermes Press. Attendees will be treated to an short documentary about Wrightson’s career as well as never before seen animated work based on his designs. The panel is scheduled for Friday July 21, 2017 between 4:00 & 5:00 pm, in Room 32AB.

Special Limited Edition SDCC17 Variant…
The Hermes book will be available in a Limited Edition SDCC17 Variant for which a voucher can be purchased via their website. Be aware that the book must be picked up in person at the convention. The Standard Edition will be released on Sept 5, 2017 and can be pre-ordered.

Hermes Press’ describes the content as follows,
“Wrightson’s extensive design work for the Gang of Seven Animation Studio, while known, has never been documented until now with the creation of this new in-depth monograph that utilizes the archives of the studio.  Marvel at concept drawings, model sheets, and hundreds of designs for projects including Biker Mice From Mars, The Juice, and Freak Show.  All of the artwork in this book has been scanned directly from the original artwork so fans can savior Wrightson’s genius up close and personal.

Also included in this monograph is an introductory essay, an in-depth interview, and photographs taken during his tenure as an associate partner of the studio”

SkeletonPete Says…
My first encounter with Wrightson’s artwork was via Web of Horror, a short-lived Creepy/Eerie style anthology magazine that first appeared on newsstands in 1969. “Berni’s” pen and ink panel work graced each issue, with his color painting of a gigantic yeti attacking a frozen campsite was the lure for issue #3. It has since been revealed that he would likely have illustrated the cover of issue 4 had it been published.

Some personal favorites from the Bernie Wrightson non-sports card collection

Batman and Swampthing (a character he co-created) under Wrightson’s pen top my favorite renditions of those characters. To my taste his magnum opus came early in his career with his illustrations for Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. His stark line work perfectly embodied a sinewy creature pulled together from stray body parts. This work led me to the discovery and appreciation of Wrightson’s artistic progenitor’s like Joseph Clement Coll and Harry Clarke.

One of my prized collectibles is a set of Wrightson “non-sports” cards, which includes a subset of the “Frankenstein” pieces.

Bernie’s family continues to maintain his website which is filled with galleries of his work and a thorough biographical overview of his life.

Stark black and white ink work is the hallmark of Wrightson’s magnum opus “Frankenstein.”

Orders of the day at Sweet Suite 2017, were fun and easy to follow.

If you’ve watched a television news or talk show segment about toy trends in the last couple of year’s it’s almost certain you’ve seen “Toy Insider Mom” Laurie Schacht doing the demonstrations. Laurie and the Toy Insider team have built a reputation as the go-to mavens for broadcast and online information about what’s hot on the horizon of play. Toy Insider’s pre-gifting season lists point to the best of what’s on the market. Their hashtag, #WeKnowPlay, is not a boast – it’s a fact.

Over the last several years Toy Insider has hosted summer and fall gatherings (Sweet Suite and Holiday of Play, respectively) for press outlets. Reporters are afforded direct contact with dozens of toy vendors and experience their newest products first hand. Andy and I, along with our metal-mongering compadre Ken Pierce, just returned from Sweet Suite 2017 and have plenty to report.

The toy/play market is overflowing with merchandise for all tastes and age levels. J.C. Penny has just announced an expansion of both their brick and mortar and online toy and game departments in anticipation of the 2017 gifting season.

While augmented reality and S.T.E.A.M. tech has been quickly adopted into t’ween aimed products, there are also dozens of beautifully produced choices for juveniles building their gross and fine motor skills. Then there are those plush companions that simply require a cuddle.

Board games are once again burgeoning with themes aimed at sharpening cognition and family bonding in the guise of friendly competition. Collector’s of all age groups have never had more options to fill their display shelves with items from the most popular to the most obscure film, television, and gaming franchises.

Released Date: June 9, 2017

Dominic “Dot” Major: Drums, Keyboards
Hannah Reid: Vocals, keyboards
Dan Rothman: Guitar

The Whole Truth, eventually…
I haven’t had a band crush in quite a while but I’m experiencing a quickly growing obsession with London Grammar whose second album, Truth is a Beautiful Thing (TIABT), was released a couple of weeks ago. It took me some time to get through the entire album because I kept putting the first four tunes into an endless a repeat loop. I finally got past “Oh Woman, Oh Man” – a perfect bulls-eye for my personal taste – only a couple of days ago.
